ABSTRACT

The emotional attention factor has been often reported as negatively associated with mental health indicators, contrary to the results attained with the emotional clarity and repair factors. The objectives of this study were to examine relationships between emotional attention, clarity and repair and factors of ruminative responses and to determine whether the relation between emotional attention and rumination could vary according to the levels of emotional attention, clarity and repair in university students from Lima, Peru. For this, in first place, a study was carried out to determine the factor structure and the internal consistency of the TMMS-24 and the Ruminative Responses Scale in 320 undergraduates of a public university in Lima, Peru. After this psychometric study, it was carried out a correlation study in 529 undergraduates from the same university. In the whole sample, both rumination factors positively correlated with emotional attention, but only brooding correlated with clarity and repair, negatively. In order to determine whether the positive relation between attention and rumination varies with the levels of attention, clarity and repair, the attention-rumination correlations were compared between groups of low, medium and high attention, clarity and repair. These comparisons shown that the relationship between attention and rumination factors varied only as a function of the level of repair. These results indicate important differences in the way that each rumination factor is related with emotional attention, on the one hand, and with emotional clarity and repair, on the other.

ABSTRACT

Depression is a major public health problem that affects a significant proportion of young adults, such as college students. A process-based approach has been proposed for its study, which seeks to identify transdiagnostic psychological variables that can be the target of change in psychotherapeutic interventions. The purpose of this paper was to analyze the interrelation between a set of process variables (cognitive fusion, rumination, and experiential avoidance), as well as to examine the relationship between each of these variables and depression in 368 college students aged 18-29 years (M = 21.35, SD = 2.36, 77.7% female). Cognitive fusion and rumination were found to comprise an overarching variable termed hyperreflexivity, while experiential avoidance constituted a different construct. By analyzing a structural equation model, it was found that only hyperreflexivity predicted depression significantly. These findings and their possible implications for clinical practice are discussed. Further study of hyperreflexivity as a superordinate variable of relevance to psychopathology is recommended.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction Increased rumination is associated with longer night-time sleep onset latency and poorer sleep quality and efficiency in people with insomnia symptoms. Objective To validate the Diurnal Insomnia Symptoms Response Scale (DISRS) in a general population sample. Method 102 participants (women = 67 and men = 35) comprising patients and relatives who attended an outpatient consultation at a health center in Mexico City were evaluated. The English-Spanish-English translation system was used by two Spanish-speaking experts on the subject, an independent bilingual expert translated the new version of the scale into English, which was then compared with the original. The following self-administered questionnaires were used to evaluate the convergent, discriminant validity of this tool: the Ruminative Response Scale (RRS), the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), and Penn State Worry Questionnaire (PSWQ). Results The internal consistency of the scale items was α = .93. Principal components factor analysis yielded three factors with an eigenvalue of greater than one, which together explain 59.5% of the variance. Correlations between the total DISRS score and the cognitive-motivational dimensions (r = .938, p < .01), negative state (r = .898, p < .01) and tiredness (r = .853, p < .01) were statistically significant. Insomnia symptoms (SCC = .89) outweighed worries (SCC = .33) and ruminant responses (SCC = .33) when discriminating between cases with low and high levels of rumination associated with insomnia symptoms. Discussion and conclusion Our results suggest that the DISRS scale has adequate psychometric properties that make it valid and reliable for use with the Mexican population.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Background The work-related rumination scale refers to thoughts related to various aspects of work that occur during periods of rest. Objective To describe the transcultural adaptation process of the work-related rumination scale to the Brazilian context (B-WRRS), and to analyze psychometric properties. Method Translation, back-translation, and initial psychometric evaluation of the scale, which comprised 15 items and 3 dimensions, were performed. B-WRRS was tested on a sample of 173 administrative staff at a public institution. To evaluate the dimensional validity, the confirmatory factor analysis was tested based on the original model proposed by the authors of the scale. Exploratory factor analysis was also performed using Mplus. Results The transcultural adaptation of the scale fulfilled the steps of assessment of conceptual, item, semantic, and operational equivalence, showing acceptability and understanding by the respondents. The evaluation of the factorial structure of B-WRRS corroborated the three-dimensionality of the scale. Conclusion The simple and quick filling of the scale highlights that the use of B-WRRS in the work environment is promising. The process of cross-cultural adaptation of the instrument did not present conceptual or semantic divergences. However, the differences observed in the composition of the dimensions indicate the need for new psychometric assessments to establish the functional equivalence of B-WRRS.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Cancer has been defined by the World Health Organization as "a disease caused by abnormal cells growing uncontrollably in the body, going beyond their usual boundaries, invading adjoining parts of the body and spreading to other organs". Being diagnosed with cancer has been described as an experience with diverse emotional reactions and difficulties in adaptation, having psychological consequences, being most common depression, anxiety and psychological distress; but also, some patients present positive consequences after having a cancer diagnosis, such as post traumatic growth, which includes positive changes presented after the disease experience. Subjective appraisal about cancer has been defined as a mediating variable for the emotional response presented after a stressor, such as cancer diagnosis, treatment, or important changes during disease process (initiating and finalizing treatment, presenting relapse or remission, as well as when having control studies). The subjective appraisal can be presented with different thought content and styles. Thought style is referred as the way thoughts about the stressor are presented, it has been classified as rumination (thoughts that are intrusive and repetitive that also increase psychological distress), cognitive engagement (thoughts associated with problem solving and meaning finding) or avoidance (aiming to stop thinking about stressor or feeling associated with it). Depending on the thought style presented at a stressor, could be the emotional response (anxiety, depression, distress, post-traumatic growth). The aim of the present study was to describe the thoughts (style, content, valence and temporality) related to cancer diagnosis in a group of ten oncologic patients. To identify if differences between thought style, valence and temporality were presented. The study design is qualitative from a phenomenological point of view. Ten oncologic (different cancer type, clinical stage and treatment) patients were asked to write the five more frequent thoughts since their cancer diagnosis. Each thought was classified by: thought style, valence, and temporality (top-down, classifying the thoughts according to theory). The same thoughts were also classified in semantic units (bottom-up, classifying the thoughts according to their own contents), generating concerns from the content. Cross tabs were made to identify contents and temporality for thought style and valence, which were analyzed by chi square to identify differences between thought style, temporality and valence. The most common thought style was cognitive engagement, followed by rumination (almost same frequency). On what respects to thought style and temporality, rumination was more focused on past (causes and attributions of cancer) and future (uncertainty about death and treatment effectiveness); meanwhile, cognitive engagement was focused on present (to enjoy present moment and focus on daily actions). Chi square was made to identify if this difference was significant, showing temporality was significantly different in cognitive engagement and rumination. The concerns identified in study participants were uncertainty about future and disease, family (communication and wellness of the family), finances (due to expensive treatments), causes and guilt about having cancer. Thoughts that were more centered in present, were more likely to be associated with cognitive engagement. Cognitive engagement has been described previously as an important variable associated with post traumatic growth. Thoughts centered in the past and present were more associated with rumination. Rumination has been associated with depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Because of mediating role of thought style in disease adaptation, emotional response to the disease, and the relation of this adaptation with the perception of quality of life in cancer patients, the design of psychological interventions aiming on promoting cognitive engagement by problem solving skills, meaning finding, and focusing on present could be a research line derived from present studies results.

ABSTRACT

Abstract BACKGROUND: Among women who have suffered loss of pregnancy, the level of grief decreases gradually. Age, mental health status and childlessness are the factors known to mostly affect women's levels of grief. OBJECTIVES: To assess the levels of grief among women who experienced perinatal loss and the changes in their ruminative thought styles over the first year after their loss. DESIGN AND SETTING: One-year follow-up study carried out in a university hospital in Turkey. METHODS: The study population included 70 women who experienced loss of pregnancy in the hospital. The sample size was calculated using G*Power V3.1. Data were collected at 48 hours, at the third month, at the sixth month and at one year after pregnancy loss, between June 2018 and June 2019. A personal information form, the Perinatal Grief Scale and the Ruminative Thought Style Questionnaire were used for data collection. RESULTS: The women's highest levels of grief and ruminative thought style were in the first 48 hours. Their tendency towards grief and ruminative thought styles decreased over the repeated measurements during the follow-up. Women aged 20-29 years had the highest levels of grief at the third month after perinatal loss. CONCLUSIONS: Nursing assessments regarding grief and ruminative thought style over the first 48 hours after perinatal loss should be integrated into nursing care for these women. Grief follow-up programs for these women can be developed through nursing research.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the relationship between emotional trauma and depressive symptoms. Methods:In November 2021, a total of 1 650 university students were assessed using scales including childhood trauma questionnaire (CTQ), distress tolerance scale (DTS), rumination response scale (RRS) and the depression anxiety stress scale (DASS). SPSS 20.0 and AMOS 25.0 software were used to analyze the data with Spearman correlation analysis, Mann-Whitney U test and mediation analysis. Results:The differences of DTS, RRS and DASS were significant between high and low trauma group(all P<0.01). Emotional trauma (16.70(6.09)) was negatively correlated with distress tolerance(10.95(2.15)) ( r=-0.26, P<0.01), and positively correlated with rumination(39.51(10.74)) and depression(4.93(5.76)) ( r=0.31, 0.38, both P<0.01). The testing of mediating effect indicated that emotional trauma had direct effect ( β=0.20, P<0.001) and indirect effect on depression through distress tolerance and rumination. Conclusion:Emotional trauma, distress tolerance and rumination are important factors influencing depression, and it could provide guidance for undergraduate psychological intervention of depression.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the relationship between rumination and depression and suicide attempts, and the mediating effect of rumination between depression and suicide attempts in adolescents with depressive disorder. Methods:Clinical interviews and questionnaires were conducted on 331 adolescents aged 11-18 with depressive disorders.Depressive symptoms were assessed with patient health questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Rumination was assessed with ruminative responses scale-10 (RRS-10), and Chinese version of the sociality module of MINI5.0 was used to assess suicide.SPSS 23.0 software was applied to descriptive statistics, Chi-square test, t-test, Spearman correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis, and the SPSS macro program PROCESS V 3.4 was used for Bootstrap mediating effect. Results:The incidence of suicide attempts in adolescents with depressive disorder was 53.78%, which was significantly higher in girls (59.48%) than that in boys (40.40%), and the difference was significant ( χ2=10.16, P<0.01). In contrast to the non-suicide attempt group, suicide attempt group had higher scores on PHQ-9((11.08±9.26) vs (14.43±7.49), t=-3.634, P<0.01), brooding ((10.76±3.89) vs (12.44±3.87), t=-3.926, P<0.01), reflection ((10.05±3.54) vs (11.20±3.33), t=-3.044, P<0.01) and rumination total score ((20.81±6.78) vs (23.64±6.42), t=-3.898, P<0.01). Regression analysis revealed that girl ( β=0.175, t=3.228, P=0.001), depressive symptoms ( β=0.168, t=3.082, P=0.002), rumination ( β=0.138, t=2.364, P=0.019) were risk factors for suicide attempts.Rumination played a complete mediating effect between depressive symptoms and suicide attempts (effect value=0.013, 95% CI=0.003-0.027). Depression symptoms significantly and positively predicted rumination ( P<0.01), and rumination significantly and positively predicted suicide attempts ( P<0.05). Conclusion:The incidence of suicide attempts was high in adolescents with depressive disorders.Depressive symptoms affect suicide attempts mainly through rumination.Clinicians should assess the rumination of adolescents with depressive disorders. In addition, clinicians should implement concurrent psychotherapy to adjust the cognitive response and reduce rumination, in order to improve the mental health and reduce suicide attempts.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the mediating effect of rumination between posttraumatic growth and coping strategy among parents of children with acute leukemia. Methods:Totally 238 parents of children with acute leukemia at Children ′s hospital affiliated to Nanjing Medical University from January 2020 to October 2021 were recruited as research object by convenient sampling method. Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI), Runminative Responses Scale (RRS) and Coping Health Inventory for Parents (CHIP) were investigated. Results:The scores of parents of children with acute leukemia in PTGI were (60.96 ± 11.81), RRS were (58.13 ± 13.40), CHIP were (106.60 ± 34.31). The demensions of PTGI in parents were positively correlated with the each demensions of CHIP ( r values were 0.256 to 0.478, all P<0.01); the RRS demensions were negatively correlated with the demensions of PTGI and CHIP ( r values were -0.566 to -0.236, P<0.01). Posttraumatic growth had a direct positive effect on coping strategy, the path coefficient was 0.082. Posttraumatic growth affects coping strategy through rumination, the indirect path coefficient was 0.797, the mediating effect accounts for 90.4% of the total effect. Rumination had a negative effect on coping strategy, the path coefficient was -0.954. Posttraumatic growth has a negative effect on rumination, the path coefficient was -0.835. Conclusions:Rumination plays a mediating role in the relationship between posttraumatic growth and coping strategy. Medical staff can alleviate the levels of rumination of parents of children with acute leukemia, so as to promote posttraumatic growth and coping strategy.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: Repetitive thinking as a transdiagnostic factor plays an essential role in the development and maintenance of emotional disorders. Two versions of the Repetitive Thinking Questionnaire (RTQ-31 and RTQ-10) are the best-known measures used for assessing repetitive thinking in clinical and non-clinical samples. The present study was conducted to evaluate the psychometric properties and factor structure of Persian versions of them. Methods: Participants were 592 students assessed with the RTQ-31, the RTQ-10, the Ruminative Response Scale, the Perseverative Thinking Questionnaire, the Beck Depression Inventory-second edition, the Beck Anxiety Inventory, and the Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale-21. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis were used to determine construct validity. Results: The findings showed that the RTQ-31 and the RTQ-10 demonstrated excellent internal consistency and good test-retest reliability (α = 0.946: r = 0.844) and (α = 0.903: r = 0.776) respectively. Also, five items from the original version were omitted due to inadequate factor loadings. This study showed that the resulting 26-item version has a two-factor structure, while the short version has a one-dimensional structure. Finally, it was found that repetitive thinking has a positive and powerful relationship with other measures of rumination and with symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. Conclusion: Persian versions of the RTQ have good factor structures and psychometric properties and can be used in clinical populations and related studies.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the effects of non-suicidal self-injury on suicidal ideation in adolescents with depressive disorder, and the mediating role of rumination and depression between them. Methods:A sample of 397 depressive disorder adolescents were recruited to complete the adolescent non-suicidal self-injury behaviour questionnaire, ruminative responses scale (RRS), self-rating depression scale (SDS), and Beck scale for suicide ideation-Chinese version(BSI-CV). All data processing and analysis were performed using SPSS 23.0.The mediating effect was tested by correlation analysis and Bootstrap analysis. Results:The non-suicidal self-injury score was (29.192±11.281), the rumination score was (65.036±12.284), the depression score was (75.770±11.278), and the suicidal ideation score was (40.681±11.626). Non-suicidal self-injury was significantly and positively correlated with suicidal ideation( r=0.403, P<0.01), rumination and depression( r=0.332, 0.470, both P<0.01). Rumination was significantly and positively correlated with depression and suicidal ideation( r=0.549, 0.181, both P<0.05). Depression was significantly and positively correlated with suicidal ideation( r=0.313, P<0.01). The direct effect value of non-suicidal self-injury on suicidal ideation was 0.341(95% CI=0.238-0.444), the indirect effect of non-suicidal self-injury on suicidal ideation through two pathways, the separate mediating effect value of depression was 0.057(95% CI=0.077-0.114), and the chain mediating effect value of rumination and depression was 0.026(95% CI=0.004-0.057). Conclusion:Non-suicidal self-injury can directly affect suicidal ideation of depressive disorder adolescents and indirectly through rumination and depression.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Background: We hypothesized that a diet with old man saltbush hay used as an alternative source of nutrients could partially replace the concentrate in the feeding of feedlot lambs. Objective: This study evaluated the behavior and performance of lambs fed diets containing increasing levels of old man saltbush hay plus concentrate. Methods: Twenty-four castrated Santa Inês lambs at approximately eight months of age (22 ± 1.97 kg) were confined in a randomized complete design and fed diets containing 30, 40, 50, and 60% (dry matter: DM) of old man saltbush hay. Results: The intake of DM and neutral detergent fiber was not affected (p>0.05) by the level of old man saltbush hay. Intake of mineral salt decreased (p<0.01) as the proportion of old man saltbush in the diet increased. Weight gain (kg) and feed efficiency worsened (p<0.05) with 40% inclusion of old man salt bush hay. The time spent on feeding and chewing increased (p<0.05), while idle time was reduced (p<0.01) with dietary inclusion of old man saltbush. Feed efficiency decreased (p<0.05) with the inclusion of old man saltbush. Conclusion: Dietary inclusion of old man saltbush affects the feeding behavior and performance of lambs in feedlot.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Background: The Chilean military dictatorship (1973-1990) left thousands of victims among those directly affected and their families, who were able to develop various mental health sequelae. Objective: The present study sought to evaluate a predictive model of posttraumatic growth (PTG) that included political ideology, religious coping and rumination in victims of political violence during the dictatorship. Method: The study involved 200 adults recognised in the Programme for Reparation and Integral Health Care (PRAIS), which is responsible for providing support to direct victims of human rights violations and their family members during the dictatorship. Out of these, 104 were women (52%) and 96 were men (48%) ranging in age from 30 to 91 years. The Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, the Brief Religious Coping Scale, the Event-Related Rumination Scale and the Political Ideology Scale were used as instruments. Results: The main results indicated that positive religious coping and deliberate rumination predicted PTG. Deliberate rumination partially mediates between positive religious coping and PTG. Conclusion: It is concluded that positive religious coping and deliberate cognitive processing favour positive change in those directly affected by political violence and their family members. This reinforces the idea that victims of these violations manage to grow after these painful experiences.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the chain mediating effect of depression and rumination between negative life events and non-suicidal self-injury(NSSI).Methods:Adolescents self-harm scale was used to investigate 1 000 students in a vocational school of Guizhou Province. A total of 333 vocational students with NSSI were screened through, and further investigated by adolescent self-rating life events check list (ASLEC), the center for epidemiological studies depression scale (CES-D), and ruminative Response Scale (RRS). SPSS 25.0 and Mplus 8.1 software were used for data analysis, and the bias corrected percentile Bootstrap method was used to test the mediating effect.Results:(1)The scores for negative life events, depression, rumination and NSSI were 67.00 (54.00, 79.00), 47.00 (39.00, 53.50), 64.00 (54.00, 76.00) and 7.00 (2.00, 10.00) respectively.(2)Negative life events were positively correlated with depression ( r=0.29, P<0.01), rumination ( r=0.40, P<0.01), and NSSI ( r=0.18, P<0.01). (3)The mediating effect size of depression between negative life events and NSSI was 0.07, accounting for 38.89% of the total indirect effect. The mediating effect size of rumination between negative life events and NSSI was 0.06, accounting for 33.33% of the total indirect effect. The chain mediating effect of depression and rumination between negative life events and NSSI was 0.05, accounting for 27.78% of the total indirect effect. Conclusion:Negative life events can indirectly affect NSSI of vocational education students through depression and rumination, as well as the chain mediating path.

ABSTRACT

@#Eating disorder (ED) referrals of school age children and adolescents, by their parents and school teachers, have become more common. Also, they are now presenting at an earlier age to the primary health care and school systems, with physical, medical and psychological symptoms. Nevertheless, there is an average of six months to two years between the onset of symptoms to formal assessment and treatment by specialist team. There are also more cases presenting to ED specialist clinic services, especially pre-pubertal children, with early onset and presentation before 14 years old. Mid and late adolescent presentations (after 14 years old) continue to make up more than two third of the cases. More than 60 percent of cases seen in specialist clinics are of the restrictive type anorexia nervosa, and often associated with persistent and excessive exercise. Thirty percent of cases presented are Bulimia nervosa, which tend to be episodic. Majority of single episode bulimia cases do not present themselves early to medical services but take on open source self-directed management. For patients with bulimia who comply to treatment program and recover after 6-12 months of therapy, they can also experience high relapse rate as they often discontinue their follow up. Avoidant-restrictive food intake disorder is more closely related to pre-pubertal onset eating disorder with arrested sexual maturity and growth failure, if left untreated. Psychiatric co-morbidities arising from body image disturbance, overdrive high achievement needs, prior exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACE), dysfunctional family or peer relationships, include anxiety, avoidance behavior, obsessive rumination, depression, suicidal ideation and attempt. Death can arise from acute presentation and chronic state of ED, when associated with medical complications from refeeding syndrome, severe malnourishment, accidents and suicide. Early identification and assessment by family physicians would significantly improve the prognosis and mitigate against long term chronicity when share care with ED specialist services.
